MBV's true beginnings were nowhere near as imperfect as their detractors would make out. Back in 1985, one of the most popular bands in the world were meant to be playing a series of shows in the UK, and were incredibly excited to be booked at The Marquee (the venue where The Stone Roses eventually played). They had a huge Christmas party a few days before, and many fans were surprised to see Kevin Shields after his performances at a number of M.E.N.E.N.E. shows, due to his low-energy performance at these extrovert gigs. The fact is he fronted a song quite different to anything he was up to at the time: pointed, proto-caustic and weirdly white. They played a powerful set, and the crowd were very ready for a big, focussed and new band. As they left the stage that night, there in the shadows was the almost unrecognisable Kevin Shields, asking the audience if they'd like to hear more of what they were playing. Importantly, he was playing alone. He had one friend in the band, who may or may not have joined later on Phil Collins self-help courses and was basically a dancer, no one else. They played a little, then Shields pushed off to make an appearance on Channel 4's Hit Parade, a program they had done before and weren't that keen to do again. He delivered this performance with his words, in a voice that was low and familiar to those familiar with the halcyon days of M.E.N.E.N.E. TV coverage.
It's likely that there were elements of magic and luck about these early performances. Kevin Shields was in a relatively small band that was struggling to make a name for itself, and had a visionary in the shape of Phil Collins. It was also likely that this version of My Bloody Valentine's music was fresh to a number of people. For many, the group had always felt more interested in sound rather than sight, and consequently, it was around this time that Shields began to develop his own ways of combining visuals and lyrics. Shields seems to draw on his memories now. d2c66b5586
