The analog tape format is a bit of an animal. It is not the most user-friendly, but it has a ton of advantages. When you get to the point where you can't do it any other way, you might as well go all the way. You'll be better off in the end. In the end, you might just enjoy the process of recording and mixing more because there are fewer roadblocks to achieving a good result. The answer is not to go back to analog tape. The answer is to go back to the roots of audio, but in a different way. The answer is to learn to record and mix as musicians first. Then record as engineers second. If you go that route, then tape becomes more than just an analog medium, and you can make a new master (or an old one!) that is as good as anything else you can get your hands on.
Mainstream thinking is that we should go digital for everything. That is the current trend in most recording studios. While this is a great way to go about it, it is not the best way. Let's face it, the quality of digital recordings are very good, but they are not perfect. The downsides to using digital recording and mastering, namely, the limitations of the digital format, are being ignored. Hard drive space is becoming less and less of a constrictive issue, and the quality of digital mixing and mastering is very good. There are many people who want to be able to have the best of both worlds.
I was blown away by a Fender Stratocaster I had in my studio with tape around the body. The guitar was a real natural. The Slate can do the same thing for a guitar. The Slate gives the guitar a tape like sound. I've been using my Slate on guitars and it just kills.
My friend has an older Yamaha desk, that I asked him to put the Slate on. It sounds amazing. The Slate is like a real tape deck with a 60 year old speaker. It even has a slider control on the side. The Slate sounds like it was designed for tape. It's been a real pleasure. My Yamaha can't compare.
My favorite is the Slate 12f. There is a little bit of microtremble, but it's really subtle. The Slate 12f and 12r are my mix tool. They are as close to tape in sound as you can get. I feel like I'm in the future. I use the Slate on my board and headphones to mix my board track. This is all done on my laptop. I move between my stereo mix and my headphones. The Slate handles the mixes just like a real tape, without the distortion.
Slate works great. A little bit of microtremble is useful in the mix, to give a touch of analog character. The VCC is my link into Pro Tools and is the perfect match for my DAW. The Slate VTM is really something you have to hear to believe. There is a slight sound of tape, but it's really wonderful.
I've heard the Slate 12f on other products and its great. I tried the Slate 12r for almost a week. I tried it on a guitar and an iPod. It was awesome. I knew it was good, but I had no idea what I was missing. It really sounds like tape. I had no idea how good it was.
